Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA), which will have to change the way it certifies farms as organic due to a conflict-of-interest clause in the first national standards for growing and producing organic food. The proposed rule, released last month by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, prohibits all certified organic farms from serving on the board of any certifying agency, and four of MOFGA's nine certification committee members are also organic growers.
