Abstract

"Feature Story" piece on the Bangor waterworks on the banks of the Penobscot River. The city of Bangor, discouraged by its failure to attract and keep a viable buyer, pressured by the historic preservation community, and legally responsible for maintaining the protected site, is looking for a creative solution, and one might be at hand. Bob Wengrzynek of Coastal America has proposed that military resources be brought in through the Pentagon's Innovative Readiness Training program to restore the facility for some future public use. The original facility was constructed in 1875 and was designed to pump water from the river to a standpipe in the city's center.
