Abstract

Wal-Mart is currently in the process of building a 103,000-square-foot store in Skowhegan, a proposal which some in the town's business community believe will enhance the town's role as a regional shopping magnet. A study done on St. Albans, Vermont, a town comparable to Skowhegan which had been proposed as a site for a Wal-Mart, shows that the idea of a Wal-Mart being of economic benefit to an area does not always hold true.
