Abstract
The 29,000-acre Scientific Forest Management Area in the northwest corner of Baxter State Park was created because park-donor and former Maine Governor Percival Baxter wanted the area to be "an example and inspiration to others." Poor management practices and exploitative logging in the area created a public furor eight years ago, prompting officials to shut the operation down for three years. A drastic change in the way the area is logged has nearly transformed it into a model of long-term forest practices. Details.
