Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a recent decision by Commissioner Lee Perry of Inland Fish and Wildlife and his advisory council refusing to allow fall fishing this year in waters with wild trout. The council agreed to send to public hearing the proposed opening of 378 lakes and ponds, bringing to 766 the number of northern waters open to fall fishing. In the eight northern counties, there are 1,546 surveyed lakes. George Smith, executive director of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine, says he remains optimistic that he will eventually achieve year-round, open-water fishing everywhere in northern Maine, including the special state-designated group of 177 remote ponds.
