Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the Land for Maine's Future Board, which was established to protect farmland and large tracts of the north woods. Voters approved spending $50 million toward that end in 1999, but the board now finds itself wrestling with politically charged policy issues on both fronts. There is disagreement over where farmland should be protected. And board members aren't prepared to fund landscape-scale easements before answering fundamental questions about public access, sustainable forestry and management costs.
