Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on Jonathan Carter's new referendum campaign to impose a 10-year moratorium on spraying forest pesticides in Maine. Carter, head of the Forest Ecology Network, has until Aug. 8 to gather the required 42,000 signatures needed to put the pesticides question on the 2002 statewide ballot. Gary Fish, a forester and member of the state Pesticides Control Board, said the industry will have to be careful about how they fight the initiative because the public perception is that pesticides are scandalous, unnecessary and a threat to the health of children.
