Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on problems associated with the deregulation of Maine's electricity business, particularly pricing disparities. The state's public advocate, Steve Ward, wants to explore a new state public power authority and municipal power purchasing cooperatives. Even Gov. Angus King, who made his fortune in the utility business, is talking about a New England-wide public utilities commission, a brand new super-agency to referee regional power markets. With special focus on Central Maine Power, Kennebunk Light & Power, Kennebunk's Citizens for Electrical Equity, and the Maine Electric Consumers Coalition. Also with a comparison of Maine electricity prices as of March 1.
