Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Poland Regional High School, which is Maine's closest approximation of Learning Results, the education reform initiative that becomes mandatory statewide in 2007. The rural communities in School Union 29 have embraced the reforms, which include standards-based performance reviews instead of grades, student and community participation in decisions, and all-out help for students who fall behind. But a non-confidence vote last year and continuing controversy this year have tarnished the early excitement. More than 63 of the 570 students eligible to attend the innovative school are in classrooms elsewhere. Still, 74 percent of last year's graduates applied for and received admission to colleges. Learning Results is not a single test like the Maine Education Assessment test, but a series of demonstrations of performance that are developed locally.
