Abstract

With health care costs rising and a persistent shortage of doctors, many uninsured Mainers utilize hospital emergency rooms as general care facilities. Last year Mainers made 610,000 emergency room visits, the fourth highest use rate in the nation. The federal General Accounting Office says half of all emergency room visits could be treated less expensively in doctor's offices and public health clinics. Feature article.
