Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on two growing businesses in central Maine: Fieldstone Gardens in Vassalboro and Johnny's Selected Seeds in Albion. Though they have different focuses, both have faced similar challenges: expansion, identifying a specific market niche in which to excel, and going online to meet customer needs. Fieldstone Gardens, started by Steve Jones in 1984, offers about 1,000 varieties of perennials at a given time, with about 6,000 total on the property. Johnny's Selected Seeds, started by Rob Johnston in 1973, grossed $8.4 million in seed sales in 2000.
