Abstract
"Feature Story" piece on Joe Guimond, 74, of Lyman, who consistently has the earliest ripe tomatoes in York County, by late June some years, early July others, but always two weeks or more ahead of his closest challenger. Guimond's plants grow inside a protective collar made from a car tire and a plastic bucket. The tires, filled with horse manure, serve as raised beds that warm up the soil. The buckets, with bottoms cut out, shelter the plants from wind and, if frost threatens, Guimond puts the lids on. With details about other gardening methods used by Guimond.
