Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on Maine Educators Against Fingerprinting, which opposes a Maine law that requires school employees to be fingerprinted for criminal background checks. The group won a major victory last week when School Administrative District (SAD) 34 in the Belfast area, faced with the prospect of losing Steve Smith, a 19-year history teacher at Belfast Area High School, took a stand against the law. To date, 60 teachers have pledged to leave their jobs rather than be fingerprinted.
