Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a legislative bill sponsored by Rep. Paul Volenik, D-Brooksville), that would provide health care coverage for all Mainers through a single-payer insurance plan with the state as administrator. Joe Ditre of Consumers for Affordable Health Care said although the cost of capitalizing the program would be about $5 billion, it would not amount to much more than is currently paid for health care in the state. Currently we spend $4.7 billion on total health care expenditures and only cover about 85 percent of the population. The bill has passed in the House by a margin of 80-58 and now goes to the Senate.
