Abstract

"News" piece on China Lake, which went from being one of the clearest and healthiest water bodies in the state to one of the most problematic in a very short time. Measures of pH, phosphorus, chlorophyll and other indicators changed dramatically over the course of a couple years, and the lake developed massive summer algae blooms. China resident Al Althenn blames a 1984 Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) order maintaining the average depth of the lake at about a foot above the record spring high-water mark all year long. But the DEP says there's no data supporting Althenn's claim.
