Abstract
Many sportsmen are quick to blame the coyote for the declining deer herd in Washington County, which has revived discussion of a coyote eradication program. Some biologists are not so sure that the canid predators are responsible, pointing instead to a combination of habitat stresses and continued poaching. Any restoration of the deer population will entail more than just controlling coyotes, including the restoration of funding for the several warden positions which are currently unfilled because of the state's financial situation.
