Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Maine's biking and walking paths with special focus on the 1.5-mile Great Falls bike trail along the Androscoggin River in Lewiston-Auburn, and housing developer Mark McCallum, who is building a five-mile bike trail network in Saco out-of-pocket. Federal spending for bicycle and pedestrian projects has increased from $4 million in the late 1980s to more than $300 million today. Maine gets between $3 and $4 million a year. It costs $350,000 per mile to build a bike trail, which is comparable to building a single lane of road. The bike trail along the Androscoggin River in Brunswick is used by an estimated 2,000 people a week. And the bike trail around the Eastern Prom in Portland is used by an estimated 2,000 people a day. With a list and description of bike trails in Maine.
