Abstract
"Arts" piece on the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, which was founded in 1946 by Willard Cummings, Charles Cutler, Henry Varnum Poor and Sidney Simon. The four men were Army veterans and WPA colleagues who envisioned a place isolated from the passing fads of the post-World War II art scene. In mid-June of this year, 65 resident artists, five faculty and five visiting faculty arrived and stayed for nine weeks of study and production. Of the 65 artists selected from 1,150 applicants, only two were from Maine: Andrea Sulzer of Brunswick and Brian Streyeski, a 2001 graduate of the Maine College of Art in Portland.
