Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Bartlettyarns in Harmony, which is the oldest woolen mill in the United States, and the only mill in the country that still spins its yarn on a "mule," which is a machine that works like a giant spinning wheel. The company is celebrating its 180th anniversary this year, still doing business much as it did when it was founded. Owner Russell Pierce estimates about half of his business is with people who deliver their own wool. The other half comes from yarn shops that sell the wool nationwide. With details about the yarn-making process.
