Abstract

Last month's Maine Rural Development Council conference in Bethel focused on secondary wood products and the development of a level of cooperation among Maine's small wood-products companies that will allow them to function as an integrated entity. The conference represents a shift among economic development agencies away from regional based strategies and toward planning and aid for a single industry. The concept of the virtual corporation, also known as an industrial collaborative, was discussed as one way that a collection of small companies can pool their resources to outmanuever larger competitors.
