Abstract
"News" piece on a plan by Wal-Mart to build a supercenter near the fragile Penjajawoc Marsh in Bangor. On Oct. 17, the Maine Supreme Court will hear oral arguments from Bangor Area Citizens Organized for Responsible Development, and Widewaters, the Wal-Mart development group. Last April, Bangor's planning board rejected the Wal-mart application in order to protect important wildlife habitat even though the proposed building would be located in a major retail development zone. According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Penjajawoc Marsh could be the single most significant emergent marsh for water birds in the state.
