Abstract

"News" piece on Portland Press Herald bylines, which have began to re-appear above stories, signaling an end to a bitter, three-year labor standoff at Maine's largest daily paper. A tentative contract settlement is the first break in the bad news emanating from the paper since it was bought by the Blethen family in 1998. Ed Murphy, vice president of the union, said some of the recent strife was due to the new owners' interest in rewriting the entire contract, some of which Murphy dates back to 1936. Restoration of bylines was a "good faith" gesture in advance of a union vote later this month.
