Abstract

The Department of Conservation and the National Park Service are at a standoff as to whether all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) will be allowed to cross the Appalachian Trail on the slopes of Saddleback Mountain. Pam Underhill, the manager of the park services' Appalachian Trail office, said that granting such permission would be a precedent-setting move the entire 2,167-mile trail and is unconvinced of its benefits.
