Abstract
The percentage of A's and B's awarded at Bates College in Lewiston has risen from 66.2 percent in 1978 to 81.1 percent in 1992, and Colby and Bowdoin colleges show similar increases. Some observers suggest that competition in attracting students is forcing some schools to be more lenient in their grading policies, while others feel that younger faculty members may feel pressure to grade leniently in order to receive good student reviews. Details of grades awarded at Bates, Bowdoin and Colby colleges and the University of Maine at Orono.
