Abstract
"News" piece on the U.S. Coast Guard in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Some lawmakers, including U.S. senator Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, fear the Coast Guard's former duties, such as patrolling fishing-restricted waters, could lose importance as they devote more resources to homeland defense. Snowe and U.S. senator John Kerry, D-Mass., are calling for an investigation by the General Accounting Office to determine if the Coast Guard is fulfilling its mission and, if not, whether some duties like fisheries enforcement could be performed by other agencies.
