Abstract

"News" piece on the Puppy Protection Act, a bill being considered by the U.S. Senate this week that has aroused the passions of many animal lovers in Maine and around the nation. The measure would strengthen the Animal Welfare Act, passed in the 1960s, and requires wholesale breeders to house dogs in sanitary, warm shelters and provide them with proper food, water and medicine. Bev Uhlenhake, director of Bangor's Humane Society, said potential dog owners should adopt an animal from the local pound rather than pay for pet store puppies. With comments by pet store owners in Bangor and elsewhere.
