Abstract
"News" piece on International Paper Co. (IP), Maine's second largest landowner, which hopes to receive millions of dollars of public and private easement money. IP is also selling off nonstrategic lands to timber interests to help amortize its $6.2 billion merger with Champion International. Pat Flood, IP's Northeast region operations manager, says the company plans to sell 130,000 acres of its 1.4 million-acre land base in Maine, and about 90,000 acres have already been sold. In 1998, IP sold 185,000 acres to The Nature Conservancy for $35 million, and the Land for Maine's Future Board is ready to close on the $1 million plus East Ridge project.
