Abstract
Feature "Salt" issue article on the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland. With special focus on Salt founder Pamela Wood, 70, of Portland, who left a teaching position at Kennebunk High School in 1977 to launch what was then an independent high school program. Wood calls Salt a training ground for storytellers. In 1982, she started a tuition-driven college program for students with academics backgrounds in anthropology, sociology and journalism. Under her tutelage, about 400 undergraduate and graduate students have written articles, recorded interviews, and produced hundreds of photographs, all preserved in the Salt archives. Also with focus on Sam Eliot, who replaced Wood as director last year.
