Abstract

Feature "Salt" issue article about snowmobiling in Jackman, where many businesses have come to depend on the recreation as thousands of snowmobilers descend each winter to ride a portion of the Interstate Trail System (ITS), which is a 12,000 mile network of groomed trails in Maine linking the state to trails in New Hampshire, Quebec and New Brunswick. The ITS is managed by the state Department of Conservation, which, along with the Maine Snowmobiling Association, helps individual towns and snowmobile clubs maintain their own section of trail. The town of Jackman is responsible for 112 miles, which will cost the local Chamber of Commerce an estimated $42,875 to maintain this year. Snowmobiling is a $226 million industry in Maine, almost twice that of skiing. With a brief history of the snowmobile industry.
