Abstract

"News" piece on bankruptcies in Maine, which reached a new record high in 2001. According to Rick Dobson, president of Consumer Credit Counseling Services, the number of bankrupt Mainers increased by about 25 percent, which adds up to more than 4,500 citizens, breaking the previous record set in 1998. The number of people in the U.S. who have filed for bankruptcy has jumped from 290,000 in 1980 to almost 1.5 million in 2001. According to Dobson, the typical debtor in Maine is a married couple in their 30s, with two children, a home and a family income of about $35,000, and their total debt is usually between $20,000 and $22,000.
