Abstract

"News" piece on a proposed new sales tax increase that may fund regional projects. A new legislative bill, LD 883, would allow a service center community to fund a specified capital improvement project through hiking up the sales tax. The goal of the local option sales tax is to spread the expense of a regional development resource over the wider community. But Rep. David Bowles, R-Sanford, said the bill may violate the Maine Constitution, which stipulates that the Legislature shall never suspend or surrender the power of taxation.
