Abstract

"News" piece on the $40.8 million in federal farm subsidies distributed in Maine in the past four years, representing about 14 percent of net income for farm families, which average about $14,000 a year. But Scott Maxwell, a Lee potato farmer, qualified for $314,327 between 1996 and 2000, making him the largest single recipient, according to a farm-by-farm list of subsidies published by the Environmental Working Group. Maxwell said he qualified because of drought and poor crop yields. About a third of Maine's 6,900 farms receive money in any given year through programs of the Farm Services Administration.
