Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on a recent decision by the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram to change its policy of running free obituaries. On Dec. 11, the newspaper's news department turned the space over to the ad department, which began charging families $2.87 per line. With comments by those who support, and those who oppose the new policy. Also with details about how obituaries have changed during the past two centuries, especially with regard to the cause of death, which is now rarely included.
