Abstract

"News" piece on a report released last week by the national Academy of Science that says Maine wild salmon are genetically unique and worthy of protection under the federal Endangered Species Act. While it supports protection for wild fish, the report bodes ill for Maine's $101 million finfish aquaculture industry. If the federal listing is sustained, aquaculture will be under increased pressure to prevent the commingling of cultivated and native fish. With reference to a recent U.S. Department of Agriculture decision ordering the immediate slaughter of all salmon in the aquaculture pens of Cobscook Bay, where an outbreak of infectious salmon anemia virus has persisted despite recent controlled kills.
