Abstract
"Arts" piece on the former St. Lawrence Congregational Church in Portland and Deirdre Nice, 38, who bought the building in 1993. After eight years of struggle, hard work, $600,000 of renovations and sheer determination, turned it into the St. Lawrence Arts and Community Center. Bill Milliken, the center's executive director, estimates it will cost up to $1.5 million to renovate the 450-seat sanctuary next door and complete the project. With a brief history of the church, which traces its origins to the 1850s.
