Abstract
"Cover Story" piece profiling Philip Conkling, 53, founder of the nonprofit Island Institute in Rockland. The institute has a $3 million annual budget, 47 employees and influences everything from fisheries management to community development. Conkling's passion is to preserve the way of life on Maine's 14 islands that are inhabited year-round. Though he and his family live in Camden during the winter months, they spend their summers on an island, and Conkling pursues his interest as a naturalist aboard exploration vessels usually once a year. In addition, he has participated in the publication of about a dozen books.
