Abstract

"News" piece on the severe shortage of affordable housing in Maine. John Wainer, research analyst at the Maine State Housing Authority (MSHA), said over 10,000 elderly units and 14,000 family units are needed to adequately meet the current need. Yet one of the major obstacles to constructing affordable housing is local resistance to proposed projects. MSHA officials say combating "not in my back yard" stubbornness requires changing perceptions of the tenants who occupy subsidized housing. So instead of referring to these units as "affordable," officials are now calling the developments "workforce housing."
