Abstract

A 1988 state regulation that essentially bars individuals who wear bioptic eyeglasses from obtaining a Maine driver's license is being questioned by eye specialists at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital in Boston. The glasses are designed specifically for long-distance viewing and reading signs, and apparently pose no problem to drivers. The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles imposed the regulation after a study showed that bioptic drivers had a higher accident rate than the general population. Details.
