Abstract

"News" piece on the number of applications for prison jobs in Maine, which is up slightly from the previous two years. Prison officials attribute the phenomenon to a struggling economy and corporate downsizing around the state. The state prison has the most difficulty attracting workers and has never been staffed to full capacity. According to Denise Lord, associate commissioner for the Maine Department of Corrections, the state prison is currently short eight to 10 corrections officers, which is a significant improvement over last year, when there were 35 unfilled jobs.
