Abstract

"News" piece on the recent construction of gas-fired power plants in Maine and other New England states, which is hurting Maine's biomass and smaller hydroelectric plants. The Greenville Steam Company, a biomass power plant that produces electricity from wood waste products, recently laid off seven of its 22 employees. Beth Nagusky, executive director of the Independent Energy Producers of Maine, says she wants regulators to get out of the way so a green market can develop. Nagusky's industry group provides 5,500 jobs, mostly in rural areas of Maine.
