Abstract
"News" piece on the dwindling number of pay phones as cell phone use grows. In 1998, there were 8,200 pay phones throughout Maine. But in 1999, there were only 6,500. According to a state pay phone law, only one pay phone per telephone exchange area is required, and there are only 250 exchange areas in the state. Peter Reilly, a spokesperson for Verizon, said pay phone use has dropped off by 20 percent in the last 2.5 years. The company has increased minimum rates from 35 cents to 50 cents per call, and has eliminated about 15 percent of its pay phones nationwide.
