Abstract

"News" piece on researchers in Delaware who are trying to produce Baculovirus, a strain of virus known to destroy only the browntail moth. If successful, the virus will be welcomed by those concerned about the impacts of Dimilin, a chemical commonly sprayed by plane over moth habitat, which is thought to also kill clams and lobsters. Browntails have infested about 4,400 acres from Portland to Brunswick, and state officials are recommending a Dimilin spraying program. Meanwhile, researchers will conduct field tests on Baculovirus this spring and summer in Harpswell.
