Abstract
"News" piece on Nancy Rovito, a mother of four from Old Town, who on Feb. 12 filed a civil lawsuit in Bangor against Novartis Consumer Health Inc., maker of the over-the-counter cold medication Tavist-D. In 1996, hours after taking the drug, Rovito was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with a terrible headache. A scan of her brain revealed a blood vessel had hemorrhaged. The lawsuit contends that New Jersey-based Novartis knew that one of the drug's ingredients, phenylpropanolamine (PPA), raises arterial blood pressure and has been associated with strokes, but failed to remove the drug from the market.
