Abstract

"News" piece on the problem of serious vandalism and harassment in public libraries, especially those in urban areas. Barbara McDade, director of the Bangor Public Library, and other library directors are considering the possibility of drafting legislation to raise awareness, define unacceptable behaviors and strengthen enforcement. Hiring security staff, already in place at the Portland Public Library, takes funds away from building the collection, providing programming and other services.
