Abstract

"News" piece on the outrage of Ron Lovaglio, the commissioner of the Maine Department of Consevation, over American Rivers' listing of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway as one of the nation's Most Endangered Rivers for 2002. Lovaglio accused the Washington advocacy organization of using inaccurate information in the announcement of the listing and called the whole effort "disingenuous." American Rivers' claims the Allagash was put on alert status because of "willful neglect" by DOC and a legislative proposal to remove the Allagash's federal Wild and Scenic River designation. Lovaglio said the group is using issues laid to rest by a prior mitigation agreement with the National Park Service, and the legislative proposal to change the river's designation was pulled last week and is dead.
