Abstract

State regulators recently put the cost of decommissioning the Maine Yankee nuclear power plant at $317 million, but Maine Yankee has only collected $93 million toward closing costs. Maine Public Advocate Stephen Ward says the cost with inflation figured in is closer to $609 million, while H.G. Brack of Mount Desert Island estimates $1.4 billion will be necessary. One major concern now is arriving at a correct estimate of closing costs while Maine Yankee is still around as an operating and liable entity. Details.
