Abstract
Profile of Brenda Commander, the first female chief of the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians. Commander served for ten years as finance officer of the 550-member tribe, overseeing more than $2 million in federal funds. The six-member tribal council is composed of five women and one man for the first time in tribal history. The Maliseet tribe owns more than 500 acres of land, and operates a health clinic, community center, administration building and a 42-unit tribal housing development.
