Abstract
The Maine Educational Assessment tests, the state's only standardized statewide tests, are an outgrowth of the 1984 state Education Reform Act. Fourth graders take the tests in January, eighth graders take them in October and high school juniors take them in early spring. The tests are designed to measure teaching statewide, but some observers wonder if they really measure the quality of school districts. Bucksport is one of the school districts where MEA results are carefully reviewed, while other districts don't do much with the tests. The MEAs are set to change again, as the tests for school year 1998-99 will be aligned with the state's Learning Results curriculum. Details.
