Abstract
In 1969, Maine became the first state in the nation to outlaw billboards, and only Hawaii and Vermont have similar legislation. Signs on the Maine Turnpike announcing the availability of lobster and promoting the University of Maine at Orono Black Bears hockey team have been permitted, and under consideration by the Legislature is a bill (L.D. 1653) that would allow signs for a state liquor store, hotel and conference center at Exit 5 in Saco. Whenever there is an exception to the law, others want to be allowed to erect a similar sign. Details.
