Abstract

At a meeting of the Bethel Winter Fest committee earlier this year Paula Wheeler suggested that townspeople make the world's largest snowman. Now the snowman coordinator for the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce, Wheeler says if the project is realized, it will truly be due to a strong community effort. Every inch of the 110-foot project requires donated time and equipment. The Guinness Record, for a 96-foot 7-inch snowman, is held by Yagamata, Japan. Wheeler said the Bethel project will require 200,000 cubic feet of snow, will weigh about nine million pounds and is estimated to cost more than $100,000. Weather and volunteers permitting, the snowman should be in place by Jan. 9, the first day of the Winter Fest weekend.
